The Vermont Sql Server Special Interest Group was founded in April 2003 by a group of professional developers and DBAs to create a community for learning and sharing knowledge.

Our Group usually meets once every other month on Wednesday, in the Burlington area. We are a special interest group affiliated with the Vermont Dot Net User Group.

We would like to thank MyWebGrocer for their generous donation of meeting space!

DatabasĀe Security Best Practices for the Vigilant

  • In-Person @ 20 Winooski Falls Way Winooski, Vermont, United States (map)
  • 18:00 - 19:30 Eastern Daylight Time
  • Language: English

The security of corporate databases and related issues have become increasingly important as enterprises consider the data they store, purchase, or acquire as assets that are critical to operations. Consequently, those involved with responsibility and control over these resources must assume the role of stewards of the data; otherwise, the security of the data, and, in turn, business operations are at risk. Over the past seven years, I have followed Erasmus's adage to leave no stone unturned—deliberating over, studying, blogging and speaking about data security, even as far away as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to show how I believe the responsibility to help protect data is under-acknowledged by executives and management: While it is truly up to database administrators (DBAs) principally, and developers additionally, to handle data responsibly, these duties are often left to ineffectual auditors. This presentation should enable the individuals tasked with data security to achieve the necessary level of responsibility, even if those at the higher ranks of the organization, with significant data breaches announced weekly, do not realize the direct link between proper data management and the organization's reputation.
